Biography

Joachim Haas received his musical education in flute and saxophone. From 1991 to 1998 he studied acoustics, communication sciences and communications engineering at the Technical University in Berlin. For research focusing on sound analysis and synthesis he received a scholarship at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He worked as a sound engineer in the music production department of Sender Freies Berlin (SFB), co-founded Freq Laboratories and developed audio and music software for Native Instruments.

Since 2001, he has worked as a sound director and music computer scientist at the Experimentalstudio in Freiburg. He was essential in the creation and realization of live electronics in works by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Vinko Globokar, Mark Andre, José Maria Sánchez-Verdú and many others. As part of an intensive collaboration with Karlheinz Stockhausen for the work COSMIC PULSES, Joachim Haas, together with G. Karman, designed the spatialization software OKTEG, which was used to realize the spatial movements of the 24 layers of COSMIC PULSES.

Joachim Haas has worked as a lecturer and performer at the Stockhausen courses in Kürten, at the Corso d’interpretazione sulle opere di Luigi Nono con live-electronics in Venice, at the ZKM in Karlsruhe or at the Matrix Academy in Freiburg, among others.

As a sound director he is regularly active at international festivals and projects, such as the Festival d’Automne à Paris, the Biennale di Venezia, the Tage für Neue Musik in Donaueschingen, the Berliner Festwochen or Musicadhoy Madrid.

From 2007 Joachim Haas was deputy artistic director at the SWR Experimentalstudio, since September 2022 now director.
