The social importance of ecological topics has not been overlooked by the games industry: although they continue to represent a niche, more and more indie games are dealing with ecology and environmental care. But why is that? What makes computer game developers tackle these issues?

»Causa Creations« is an independent game development studio consisting of a multidisciplinary team of developers, artists and designers. They understand games not merely as entertaining diversions but aim to create thought-provoking experiences.

Dominik Rinnhofer – curator of the section »Eco Games« in the exhibition »zkm_gameplay. the next level« – poses the following questions for discussion:

  • What motivates video game developers to address social and environmental issues?
  • How can oppressive and difficult topics such as environmental pollution and flight be treated in games?
  • What should these games trigger in players?
  • How can we understand the trend towards ecological themes in large development studios?
