To mark the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics, UNESCO has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Open Hertzlab is dedicated to this topic with lectures and interactive stations.

You are interested in quantum mechanics in general and want to know more about the state of superposition, in which a system is in several states simultaneously until a measurement defines the final state? Are you wondering what the smallest possible memory unit, the qubit, has to do with quantum computing? Or would you like to find out about art with and about quantum technology? Then the April issue of Open Hertzlab is the right place for you!

In addition to the basics of superposition and qubits, you can expect exciting insights into quantum art. Jia Liu will open the event with a lecture on the background and creation of her piece »Superposition Composition. grüße unscharf«, which will be premiered on the ZKM Music Balcony on Saturday. »Superposition Composition« is an artistic-scientific experiment commissioned by the ZKM | Hertzlab using a computer-controlled piano, in which she translates the quantum mechanical principle of superposition into a musical form.

Afterwards, you can experiment at interactive demonstration stations and learn about the basics of programming quantum computers or take part in a SuperCollider session for joint data sonification. You can also join a quantum art group. Or not. You can join and not join at the same time. Be entangled in the cat state of the group or not. Use our quantum computation device to decide.

You are welcome to join us - just drop by!
