ARD Radio Play Days 2011
A Festival for the Radio Play
Wed, November 09, 2011 – Sun, November 13, 2011, Festival

Once again, the time to celebrate the radio play has arrived: From November 9 to 13 the ARD Radio Play Days are presenting many variations of sound art at ZKM and at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Thousands of visitors are expected to attend the largest German-language event centered on radio plays and sound art. The festival’s core event is the “ARD German Radio Play Prize”. The best current productions from state public radio institutes and German public radio have been submitted to the competition. An independent jury of experts will select a winner from ten finalists, whose contest submissions will be presented to the public. At the closing of the presentations, the jury will comment in a live discussion on the works, after which the public has the opportunity to speak with the artists in a question forum. Additionally, the contest winners for the “German Children’s Radio Play Prize”, the “Children’s Radio Theater Prize of the City of Karlsruhe” and the ARD Online Awards will receive their awards. A fifth prize will be given in the form of “Premiere on the Web”.

The accompanying program for the ARD Radio Play Days offers concerts, lectures, and much more: The live radio play “Winnetou I” takes listeners on a journey into Karl May’s world-famous world of novels. Throughout the festival days, numerous presentations give insight into ARD’s current production of radio plays. On comedy night, the musical cabaret group Familie Polpolski and writer Jan Weiler give a hilarious close of the third festival day. Those who prefer a dreamy experience are invited to attend the radio play nights of “Jules Verne” or “Dickie Dick Dickens” on Friday and Saturday. On the other hand, new viewpoints and outlooks are assured with the “Science Slam”, in which young researchers compete with each other – with a thematic spectrum ranging from dolphin research to Icelandic sagas. There is also fun in store for smaller visitors: all of Sunday, November 13, is reserved as “children’s radio play day” with many chances to listen and participate and free admisison to all ZKM | Museums. The highlight is the live orchestra radio play “Alice in Wonderland” – by composer Henrik Albrecht, arranged for a magical stage.
