Biography

Yana Milev is cultural philosopher, sociologist, ethnographer and curator. After an artistic career (she was represented by Gallery EIGEN+ART Leipzig/Berlin for 10 years, exhibited at documenta X in 1997) she moved to Japan to study traditional Japanese martial arts (Kyudô, Aikidô). In 2003 she began doctoral studies in philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She completed her Ph.D. thesis about the topics of state of emergency and sovereignty (Emergency Empire) in 2008. In 2014, she habilitated in sociology at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), where she received the venia legendi for sociology of culture. In addition to numerous teaching, research, and project management activities at the Seminar for Sociology (SfS-HSG), the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-HSG), and the Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts (ICS) at ZHdK, among others, she founded the independent platform AGIO | Social Analysis + Political Education in 2017. Milev's anthology »D.A. – A Transdisciplinary Handbook of Design Anthropology« (2013, PL Academic Publishers) manifests a new curatorial and scientific approach to design scholarship in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2017, Milev initiated the research project »Decoupled Society. Liberalization and Resistance in East Germany since 1989/90« which is designed to be a multi-volume edition.
