The Dutch artist Marloes de Valk won the production price »HASH« in 2018. The video games »What Remains« and »Villains and Heroes«, developed with the prize money of 8,000 euros, will be presented as part of the exhibition »Writing the History of the Future«.
What strategies do US industry and lobby groups use to spread disinformation in order to delay effective action against climate change, acid rain, and the health risks of smoking? And how can these be undermined in order to regain agency? Dutch artist Marloes de Valk explores these questions in her games »What Remains« (2019) and »Villains and Heroes« (2020). Developed with the »HASH« production price, the two works are presented in the exhibition »Writing the History of the Future«.
Her artistic works range from computer games to installations and publications. In addition to surveillance technologies and artificial intelligence, she critically examines the mechanisms and contexts of propaganda, fake news, and climate change. During a four-week Web Residency in 2017 on »Blowing the Whistle, Questioning Evidence«, curated by Tatiana Bazzichelli, she explored in the essay »How to Escape Reality in 10 Simple Steps« the strategies of industry and politics to manipulate public opinion and the role of the media, based on PR campaigns during the 1980s in the US.

HASH Award
The »HASH« is awarded to an outstanding project of the Web Residencies by Akademie Solitude & ZKM every two years. The title of the award is borrowed from the term “hash value” used in information technology which is unique for each file. The Web Residencies program was initiated by Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2016 to support young talents from the digital scene and all artistic disciplines engaged in web-based practices. The ZKM has been a partner of this program since 2017.
Each year, three calls are announced, which are conceived by different international guest curators. Three to five artists are selected per call to realize an online project within a four-week web residency.
