The British musician, designer and digital artist Simon Katan is presently working on pieces investigating the new connection between sound and image or graphics. His goal is to understand and define these two forms. He will be presenting his approach in the discussion with Ludger Brümmer and by means of several examples of his audiovisual works at the IMA | lab No. 20.
The discussion will be held in the English language.
Simon Katan
is a digital artist, who has a playful approach to music. He programs software that generates the musical odysseys in strange animated worlds. As the artist himself says, his work is on subjects ranging from hidden mechanisms, emergent behavior, paradox, self-reference, inconsistency, abstract humor, absurdity and wonder. Simon Katan also designs computer games. He combines the world of games with the electronic music of his audiovisual works.
Many of his ideas were produced without digital domains with the use of pencil, scissors and paper; Katan works more and more with the digital platforms or programs OpenFrameworks and SuperCollider.
At this year’s Prix Ars Electronics, Katan received "honorary mention" for his work Cube With Magic Ribbons. He gained his PhD on the subject of audio-visual codependency in music at Brunel University, and produced as well as performed a multimedia opera, which he presented for the first time with his performance duo Brainer at the Borealis Festival in Bergen/Norway.
Selected exhibitions and performances:
Borealis Festival (Bergen) 2013, ICMC (Ljubljana) 2012, Hide and Seek Weekender 2012, SuperCollider Symposium 2012, Borealis Festival (Bergen) 2012, You Are Go (Berlin) 2011, NetAudio Festival 2011,IGFest 2011, Secret Garden Party 2010, Spitalfields Festival 2010, Sonica Festival (Ljubljana) 2011.
The discussion will be held in the English language.
