Biography
Caroline Dlugos was born in Berlin in 1959. From 1977 to 1982 she studied Art and Visual Communication at the Universität Gesamthochschule Kassel, under Floris M. Neusüss and Harry Kramer. She continued her studies (1982-84) at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, making a second stay in Paris in 1986-88. Since 1996 she has been Professor of Photography at the Fachochschule, Dortmund. She lives in Cologne.
In September 1995 Dlugos described her work as follows: "In my work I treat the unnoticed, and to some extent already consummated, advent of manipulated nature and artificial life in our natural environment. Analogies can be drawn between a computer language and the chain of information in a gene. Gene technology has already advanced so far that it is now possible to decipher a gene text and re-write it. I endeavour to rehearse pictorially the far-reaching problems to which this situation gives rise. For this purpose, I use computer programmes that - like the gene texts - digitally create plant structures. Data on several detailed botanic models is provided as a starting point and appropriate simulations of plant growth are generated incorporating accidental factors. These artificially generated plants are then transplanted into a landscape that is an original photographic invention."
