Robert Stuart Smith

Robert Stuart-Smith is an architect and specialist in behavior-based programming for design and robotic fabrication. His work explores the role of Additive Manufacturing within building design and construction. He is a founding director of »robert stuart-smith design ltd« (rs-s design), co-founding director of the computational research practice »kokkugia«, a Studio Course Master in the AA.DRL Master’s program at the Architectural Association School in London, and a Principle Research Associate at UCL-Computer Science where he is a Co-Investigator for architectural design and swarm robot construction processes for the EPSRC Research Project »Aerial Additive Building Manufacturing« (Aerial ABM). This research is developing an on-site 3D-printing construction process that utilizes a swarm of aerial robots.  Robert’s practice was recently awarded with the RCA Design Innovation Award and has been published in journals such as »L’Architecture D’Aujourd’hui«, »L’Arca« and »AD: Architectural Design«. He has been a three times nominee for the Lakhov Chernikov Prize, and had works acquired by the FRAC Gallery in France. Robert has also taught at Washington University, UEL and RMIT and lectured internationally at institutions including MIT, ETHZ, ICD Stuttgart, Angewandte Vienna, Tsinghua University, and the Strelka Institute in Moscow.
