Simon Katan
Biography
Simon Katan is a digital artist, who has a playful approach to music. He programs software that generates the musical odysseys in strange animated worlds. As the artist himself says, his work is on subjects ranging from "hidden mechanisms, emergent behavior, paradox, self-reference, inconsistency, abstract humor, absurdity and wonder". Simon Katan also designs computer games. He combines the world of games with the electronic music of his audiovisual works. Many of his ideas were produced without digital domains with the use of pencil, scissors and paper; Katan works more and more with the digital platforms or programs OpenFrameworks and SuperCollider. At this year’s Prix Ars Electronics, Katan received honorary mention for his work »Cube With Magic Ribbons«. He gained his PhD on the subject of »audio-visual codependency in music« at Brunel University, and produced as well as performed a multimedia opera, which he presented for the first time with his performance duo Brainer at the Borealis Festival in Bergen/Norway.
