Artificial Intelligence determines many areas of our everyday lives, such as search engines, voice assistants and social media. It also dominates developments in business and industry. However, it would be a fallacy to assume that the technology acts as a neutral entity: the algorithms are primarily trained on white, male users.

»Coded Bias« by Shalini Kantayya asks what this imbalance means for people who fall off the grid. The film shows research by MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini, who is dedicated to widespread bias in algorithms. She had previously discovered that many facial recognition technologies do not accurately detect darker-skinned faces or classify the faces of women.

The screening is part of the new film series by ZKM and Kinemathek, in which we would like to enter into a dialog with you on social issues.
