Ian Murray: Keeping on Top with the Top Songs

Wed, June 19, 2013 8:00 pm CEST

Location
Cube
In 1970 Ian Murray produced "The Top Song"; an audio recording with the first ten seconds of all Top 100 songs of the 10 years prior. The same year the accompanying performance "Keeping on Top of the Top Song" took place, which Murray offered again in 1973 in the context of an exhibition at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax. Undoubtedly this performance counts as a high point among the NSCAD’s projects.

The work not only became famous as a central work in conceptual audio-art, but also through its early critical confrontation with the phenomenon of the number one song in the context of popular culture and the culture industry.

In cooperation with the Badischer Kunstverein, Ian Murray will restage his performance in the framework of the exhibition "CONTINENTAL DRIFT. Concept Art in Canada: the 1960s and 70s". The show at the Badischer Kunstverein, on view until September 8th 2013, among other things, introduces the projects and teaching approaches for the artistic education at NSCAD.
