Tim Otto Roth: 100 Days. 100 Imachinations

Fri, November 26, 2004 – Sun, March 06, 2005

Location
Cube Subspace
In the words of Peter Weibel, “images are no longer there to help understand the world; images are there help to understand data.” In his project entitled »100 Days - 100 Imachinations« Tim Otto Roth uses data flows to make the world behind them visible again through use of the imagination. His images stem from the overlapping of two patterns consisting of vertical sequences and they undergo a 50% change every day as a result of alterations to one of the sequence patterns resting on the number pi. Roth's delocalising intervention - one and the same picture appears simultaneously in several places - enables him to draw attention to a new quality in Web-based images: their potential lack of location. The Imachinations begin simultaneously at the Schloss Dagstuhl International Conference and Research Center for Computer Science, a global mecca for computer scientists. Tim Otto Roth, who has received several awards for his work as a media artist, including the »\\international\media\art\prize2004« in the Interactivity category, is thus continuing the project that he began in Kassel in 2002 and presented last year, amongst other locations, at the Arctic research station of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Spitzbergen, the northernmost civilian hub on the World Wide Web. This net-based series of images can be seen on the square outside the ZKM and the Municipal Gallery on a screen that is 3 metres tall and 12 metres wide.
