Biography

from 1958Medical student in Tübingen
1961––1963Studies at the German Institute for Film and Television (DIFF) in Munich and organization of underground film festivals
1964Move to Berlin
1966-67Studies (camera) at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). Organizes political discussions on the position and function of the academy. Attempts to establish an »Art class.« Works as a cameraman
1967Leaves the academy due to institutional restrictions. 
Realization of first films on art in collaboration, among others, with Hannah Weitemeier and Bernhard Höke. These include Schaustücke – Ereignisse (1967, SFB), a short documentary on an action by Bernhard Höke at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and 6th Art Biennale San Marino 1967 (1967, WDR).
1968Production of the television feature Konsumkunst – Kunstkonsum (1968, WDR); development of the concept of the »Television Gallery Berlin;« submission of an initial proposal to Sender Freies Berlin; beginning of collaboration with Ursula Wevers.
1968–1969Production of the first television exhibition LAND ART
1969Broadcast of LAND ART  on the ARD First Channel; realization of further television interventions, including TV as a Fireplace (with Jan Dibbets) and Self Burial (with Keith Arnatt)
Development of further projects, including the unrealized Artscapes
In December 1969, Schum and Wevers move into the converted Mercedes van.
1970Realization and broadcast of the second television exhibition IDENTIFICATIONS (Südwestfunk)
1971Transition from 16 mm film production to video production; collaboration with Galerie Konrad Fischer in Düsseldorf
1971–1973Founding and operation of the videogalerie schum in Düsseldorf together with Ursula Wevers; production and distribution of video editions as a new model between art production and distribution
1972Concept for a video department at the Folkwang Museum, Essen
1973Suicide
