The publication »Vertrautes Terrain - Contemporary Art in & about Germany« is the product of an exceptional exhibition project organized by the ZKM I Karlsruhe. Here the focus was placed on works of art which engage with themes, events, and personalities in Germany's historical past through to the present-day. It is precisely against the background of the two jubilees, namely, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, that artistic reflection about Germany becomes interesting and highly topical. Not only will the estimated 100 artist and the 200 persons and projects from the areas of music, dance, literature, fashion, design, architecture, theater, and film represented in the exhibition be exhibited, but so also will excerpts from lectures and discussions which accompanied the project. This comprehensive publication comprises a handbook of sorts on the complex thematic field of Germany as a familiar but also unfamiliar terrain.
