In his digital works, Spanish-American media artist Daniel Canogar (*1964, Madrid) explores the influence of technology on social coexistence. The “Pixelweaver” exhibition shows a selection of his generative art at the EnBW Group headquarters.
Daniel Canogar’s data-driven works and generative animations, which are frequently exhibited on screens in major museums, biennials and festivals around the world, are based on algorithms he has developed himself. These react in real time to various data sets, including climate change readings, energy consumption patterns, the constant stream of 24/7 news cycles and search queries on Google and other search engines.
In the “Pixelweaver” exhibition at the EnBW Group headquarters, the artist is showing generative works from his series of the same name, in which he refers to the weaving technique of textiles. These serve as a metaphor to address the social fabric of a data-driven society. With the works in the exhibition, Canogar also recalls the close relationship between information technology and textiles, starting with the Jacquard loom in the early 19th century, which is regarded as one of the forerunners of today’s computers. The central work in the exhibition is “Phloem” (2023), a generative artwork that visualizes the energy mix in Germany in real time as a constantly changing composition.
