Garth Knox: Viola Spaces

Thu, January 10, 2008 8:00 pm CET

Location
Cube

The instrumentalist Garth Knox is regarded as a leading viola player in terms of aesthetics and playing technique. For the second time, he will present the results of his work with Karlsruhe Viola students at the ZKM.

Through his dealings with modern media techniques, he develops a new, up-to-date repertoire for the stringed instrument. In the first part of the concert, eight short studies, "Viola Spaces," for two to four violas will demonstrate the current state of playing technique. The second part of the concert will feature works with a music-theater aspect: a quartet inspired by French ballrooms, a duo for viola and tuba that tells the story of Jonah and the whale, a sextet for "Viola d’amore," and five violas that conjure up the "aura" of Ockeghem’s sixteenth-century songs. Garth Knox composed all of the evening’s works.
