With the invention of the automobile 125 years ago, one of the greatest dreams of the nineteenth century was realized – absolute individual mobility.
On the occasion of the Automobile Summer, Baden-Württemberg 2011, ZKM presents an exhibition that takes up the theme of mobility in two senses: on the one hand, the material and physical mobility of the body through the car, and on the other hand, the immaterial mobility of signs through telegraph and telephone, radio and television, and first and foremost, through the Internet.
In the exhibition CAR CULTURE. Media of Mobility (June 18, 2011–January 8, 2012), ZKM | Media Museum shows artistic reflections on physical and also immaterial mobility. On exhibit are the car as cult object and symbol of individual freedom as well as technological developments that allow the mobility of information.
