With a guest from Lithuania and a composer from Taiwan, the ZKM | Institute of Music and Acoustics once again demonstrates its internationality at the IMA | lab No. 17:
In contrast to Ričardas Kabelis, a conceptual-analytical composer, Shing-kwei Tzeng works far more intuitively and emotionally. In the evening, both will be providing insights into their creations with works, in part produced at the ZKM studios. The following discussion with Ludger Brümmer will turn on aesthetic questions and one’s identity as composer.

The Artists
Shing-kwei Tzeng (*1946)
After initially studying music in Taipeh, Taiwan, the composer moved to Germany in the late 1970s. He studied composition in Freiburg, and a scholarship enabled him to undertake further research visits in France. Within the context of his work, Shing-kwei created multimedia pieces in which instruments and western composition are fused into a unique language of forms. Shing-kwei Tzeng has been professor of composition, computer music and music analysis at the National Taiwan University, Taipeh since 1981; in 1995, he founded the Society for Electro-acoustic Music in Taiwan (TCMA). His works are performed at international festivals such as Gaudeamus Music Week, World Music Days and Festival of ISCM, or the Presence Festival Paris.
At the IMA | lab, Shing-kwei Tzeng will present two new works, on which he is currently working, at the ZKM studios.
Ričardas Kabelis (* 1957)
The composer is considered one of the most radical in contemporary music; his pieces are characterized by a certain hardness and clarity as a result of the formal criteria he uses. Kabelis studied composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music. In 1989, he gained his doctorate which centered on researching on dynamics and sound color in orchestral pieces of the twentieth century. Alongside instrumental compositions for various arrangements, one of the points of emphasis in his works lies in electronic music, in which Kabelis consistently reduces musical material and sounds out single characteristics. Ričardas Kabelis has received numerous awards for his compositions, and his pieces are performed internationally at important music festivals. He regularly teaches and publishes in the field of electronic music and computer-supported composition. His research work, bearing the title »Computer Electronics in Musical Instruction and Composition«, formed the basis for the creation of the Electronic Music Studio of the Lithuanian Academy of Music in Vilnius.
