Description
»Artistic Sonification Activities at the ZKM«
This talk takes a current R&D project done together with the Federal Office for Hydraulic Engineering and Hydrometrical Examination as point of departure for an indepth examination of artistic sonification activities realised at ZKM | Center for Art and Media during the last decade: From acousmatic compositions and app-development to large-scale installations processing big data. Respective approaches get examined from a musicological angle taking empirical research details into consideration. In a further step the composer of an acousmatic composition will present its applied parameter mapping as well as artistic strategies for using sonifications on current data taken in a water basin. This Project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics (IMA) initiates and actively supports composition plans and projects that stand out for their innovative use of technology and aesthetic curiosity. It is one of the leading production places for electronic music in Europe at the interface of production, mediation and artistic research. Core of the IMA is the ZKM_Klangdom (sound dome), a spherical setup of 47 loudspeakers that serves the development and reproduction of of three-dimensional music. In an international artist-in-residence program the IMA invites composers to realise new works. In its efforts of introducing young people to advanced electronic music, the IMA organizes numerous mediation projects, and it cooperates with international festivals, renowned institutions and composers, artists and orchestras. It awards the renowned Giga-Hertz-Award for electronic music, honouring outstanding life-time achievements within the genre as well as artistic-innovative projects of younger composers. The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics works as a division of the ZKM | Karlsruhe under the direction of Ludger Brümmer.
