Biography

Rector of the École européenne supérieure de l'image in Angoulême/Poitiers since 2005. 

Studied German Language and Literature, Romance Languages and Literature, and Art History in Marburg und Paris; doctorate at the University of Mannheim for a thesis on 19th century French literature (Allegory and Photography). Visiting professorships for art history at the University of Basel (1991), for the graduate programme on the History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz (1991–1992), at the Philosophy Faculty of Düsseldorf University (2000-2001) and at the Institut supérieur des beaux-arts (HISK) in Antwerp. From 1995 to 2000 Professor of Cultural Science Studies and Founding Rector of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Project Studies at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts, Kiel. Senior Visiting Curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal, and a Faculty Member of the European Graduate School, New York / Saas Fee since 2001. From 2001 to 2005 Founding Director of the ISNM International School of New Media at the University of Lübeck. Since 2003 Member of the Academy of the Arts, Berlin.

Numerous publications on literature, art and photography, including: »Die aufgehobene Zeit. Curator of numerous exhibitions, including: »Denis Roche – plus de lumière«, Vienna / Palais Liechtenstein 1987; »Die aufgehobene Zeit. Die Erfindung der Photographie durch Henry Fox Talbot«, Berlin / Neue Nationalgalerie, Paris / Palais Tokyo, 1989/1990; »Photography after Photography«, Munich / Praterinsel, Philadelphia / ICA, 1995/96; »Les lieux du Non-Lieu«, Munich 1997; »Le territoire en deuil«, Arles 1998; »Tomorrow For Ever«, Krems, Duisburg 1999/2000.
