Biography
DARUM (Victoria Halper and Kai Krösche) creates performances, installations, films, as well as sound, video and media art. Blurring the boundaries between documentary and fiction, DARUM’s works direct attention away from the seemingly straightforward and evident, towards the unresolved and contradictory conditions and occurences within our society. The overarching question of »Why?« (»Warum?« – German for why) prevails in all their projects.
DARUM's debut performance in Vienna, »Uninvited Guests« (2019) was invited to the Impulse Theater Festival 2020 and nominated for the NESTROY Special Prize 2019. Their performative installation »Exit: Open« (2020), adapted into a film due to COVID-19, was nominated for the NESTROY Corona Special Prize 2020. Their third and most recent performance production in Vienna, »Homesick« (2022), was awarded the NESTROY Special Prize 2023.
DARUMs film and media art projects have been showcased at various festivals, including Germany (Hof International Film Festival; die digitale in Düsseldorf) and in the USA (Seattle International Film Festival, Brooklyn Film Festival). Currently, DARUM is engaged in new multidisciplinary projects as part of a two-year art grant from the City of Vienna for 2024 and 2025. Victoria Halper and Kai Krösche of DARUM have been invited to a residency at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe for their conceptional work on their first virtual reality theater hybrid called »[EOL]. End of Life«.
