Rafaël Rozendaal

Born in 1980, Dutch-Brazilian artist Rafaël Rozendaal lives and works among other locations, in New York. Born to artist parents, Rozendaal began painting and drawing as a young child, before later pursuing studies at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten, in Maastricht, where he graduated in 2002. In his own words, he uses the Internet as his canvass. His artistic work covers websites, installations and drawings. He holds lecture tours around the globe and is an author. His core activity consists in his works on screen, each with its own domain boasting an estimated 30 million visits per year. In his work, he explores the screen as pictorial space. His installations and two-dimensional works are invariably based on user experience with the new media, and seek to develop to develop a new imagery and material language by drawing on traditional artistic genres. Rozendaal also became well-known for his open curatorial format “BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer)”. To these events one brings one’s own projectors, and videos are projected. Rozendaal reaches a broad public with his works. For this reason it is not surprising that his works have already been reported on by such various media as Time Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Flash Art, Dazed & Confused, Interview, Wired, Purple, McSweeney’s, O Globo, Vice, Creators Project, Artreview, Metropolis M, +81, La Repubblica, and Vogue.
