Previous research has shown that digital media participation has a positive, albeit small, effect on political participation. While scholars have mostly focused on explaining the size of this effect, the project by Prof. Dr. Marc Debus, Prof. Dr. Harald Schoen and Dr. Rosa M. Navarrete will examine how agenda setting has changed from top-down and bottom-up through the use of digital media. Among other things, the project will analyse whether and how parties and politicians use their online participation to influence the behaviour of citizens.

The event will be held in German.

Our guest: Prof. Dr. Marc Debus is Professor of Comparative Government at the University of Mannheim and Director of the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES). He studied political science, sociology, methods of empirical social research, modern history and economic and social history at the Universities of Marburg and Mannheim and received his PhD from the University of Konstanz. His research focuses on the analysis of political institutions, especially in multi-level systems, and their impact on legislative activity, party competition and governing in coalitions.

Moderator: Sabine Faller is a research assistant in the Museum Communication Department at ZKM | Karlsruhe. Her focus is on the conception and implementation of workshops, projects and educational programs in the fields of media art, digital education and online learning – currently for the research project »Digitalisierung im Dialog – digilog@bw«.

The event is part of the #digiloglounge series of talks. Once a month, experts from digilog@bw give an insight into their digital research topics and answer questions in the ZKM live stream!

The aim of the digilog@bw project is to shape digitalization in dialogue with society in order to create the foundations for a value-oriented digital transformation. Through events, talks and workshops on current topics, we invite you to reflect and discuss together.

Exciting articles on the various research topics as well as further expert chats can also be found in our blog on digilog@bw.
