What does prehistoric cave painting have to do with contemporary art? And why are volcanology and media technology of highest relevance? The curator Martin Guinard discusses such and much more with the artists and scientists Karen Holmberg and Andrés Burbano.

In the third edition of the »Terrestrial University«, we welcome the artists Karen Holmberg and Andrés Burbano. Thematically, they deal with the exploration of the Earth's interior in the context of the exhibition »Critical Zones«, to be more precise: with a volcano in Patagonia. The two give us an insight into their research, during which they took the footage that formed the basis for their artistic work. Their 360-degree video »Topography-Time-Volcano: Online version«, can be explored on our digital platform. In the physical exhibition, which will open its doors for visitors on July 24, 2020, they present the multi-channel video installation »Double-Sided Immersion«. Both representations transport this immersive environment in a fascinating way.

    More on the Terrestrial University

The »Terrestrial University« is an experimental lecture series in the context of the exhibition »Critical Zones – Observatories for Earthly Politics«, and we cordially invite you to attend the class. In a kind of lecture series of different formats such as lectures, discussions, artist talks, performance lectures or workshops, we turn to the critical situation of the Earth. Together with invited artists, scientists, curators and citizens as well as citizens' initiatives, we explore the »critical zone« -– the thin surface of the Earth, in which all transactions of life are mutually dependent. The focus is on the crucial question of which shifts in thinking are necessary to maintain the »critical zone« in its fragile balance.

The »Terrestrial University« will be broadcasted via live stream, and accompanied by the chat of the Critical Zones Telegram group. You can find the past events of the »Terrestrial University« hereunder.

»Forensic Architecture« (FA) is a research agency, based at the Goldsmiths University in London. They undertake advanced spatial and media investigations into cases of human rights violations, with and on behalf of communities affected by political violence, human rights organizations, international prosecutors, environmental justice groups, and media organizations. The research of Samaneh Moafi focuses on developing new evidentiary techniques for environmental violence. She holds a PhD from The Architectural Association (AA), and a BA and MA in Architecture from the University of Technology, Sydney.

With their work »Cloud Studies«, »Forensic Architecture« is part of the exhibition »Critical Zones«, in the digital as well as the physical space. Their video essay deals with the topic of toxic clouds and merges investigations on specific cases with the effects of these toxic clouds in different geographical locations, with, for instance, phosphorus and glyphosate in Gaza, methane in Argentina or Chlorine in Douma. Besides the audiovisual narrative, the essay provides additional resources on the individual chapters linked to more in-depth information.

Find the work on the digital platform of »Critical Zones«

The conversation will take about an hour. The audience has the opportunity to ask specific questions to Samaneh Moafi via our telegram group (zkm_criticalzones).

The event will be held in English.
