What problems do institutions like the ZKM face when they show historical films? In this conversation, Markus Heltschl, curator of the exhibition, Dorcas Müller from the Laboratory for Antiquated Video Systems at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and Martin Koerber, director of the film heritage of the Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin, will talk about the problems institutions like the ZKM are confronted with when they show historical films. The conversation will be moderated by Teresa Retzer.

On the one hand, the experts will examine the media differences between analog film and digital video and explain how historical films are reproduced in the digital age. In the case of 100-year-old films that have been copied and re-digitized many times, how can one ascertain what is the original? Why are certain copies held to be institutionally and historically recognized screening versions? What is the difference between the 'original' and the reference copy, and how are films restored and archived at the ZKM and other institutions such as the Deutsche Kinemathek?
