Two pioneers of performance and video art, Ulrike Rosenbach and Suzanne Lacy, in conversation about their common artistic beginnings in the women's and civil rights movements of the 1970s and parallel developments in their works.

Ulrike Rosenbach is one of the most renowned German media artists. Since the early 1970s she has been using the then new medium of video in live video actions, performances and installations. Her focus is on questions of female identity, gender-specific role attributions, and the holistic relationship between humans and nature. With her works and teaching assignments at art academies in Germany, the USA, Austria and the Netherlands, she has had a decisive influence on the development of performance and media art.

The American artist Suzanne Lacy is an outstanding protagonist of socially engaged and public performance art. She coined the term New Genre Public Art – a public, mostly activist motivated art, apart from institutional structures. Her installations, videos, and performances deal with sexual violence, rural and urban poverty, incarceration, labor and aging. Lacy’s large-scale projects span the globe, including England, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Ireland and the U.S.

The talk is organized in the context of the solo exhibition »Ulrike Rosenbach. today is tomorrow«. Beforehand, at 5.30 pm there will be a curatorial tour of the exhibition by Philipp Ziegler.
