Biography
1969-1973 studied at the experimental studios of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University, New York (B.A.). 1973-1980 studied experimental music; worked together with David Tudor, John Cage and the group »Composers Inside Electronics – Rainforest«; 1974-1976, technical director for video productions at »Art/Tapes/22« in Florence; 1976-1980, Artist in Residence in the experimental studio WNET/13 Television Laboratory in New York; fellowships: 1977, Rockefeller Foundation, 1978/1983/1986/1989, National Endowment of the Arts, 1980/1981, Japan/US Creative Arts Fellowship. Study trips include travel to Java, Tibet, Japan and North Africa; 1983 Visiting Professor for Video at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia; 1994 named official representative of the USA at the 46th Venice Biennal; 1995 honorary doctorate of the University of Syracuse; 1997 honorary doctorate of School of The Art Institute of Chicago; 2000 honorary doctor of the California Institute of Arts. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences appointed Viola a honorary professor in 2000; Bill Viola lives and works in Long Beach, California.
