In the late 70s, an interdisciplinary team led by the composer Iannis Xenakis developed the UPIC (Unité Polyagogique Informatique CEMAMu)out of an effort to transform drawings into synthesized sound.
This comprehensive volume, comprising 27 richly illustrated contributions, is dedicated for the first time to the history of the development of this unique calculating instrument and records its technical, social, institutional and pedagogical significance to the present day practice of contemporary composers working with the UPIC idea in current computer programs. The volume is produced in cooperation with the Centre Iannis Xenakis, will contain previously unpublished archive material and will be available to the public as an additional digital version free of charge. Supported by Interfaces, a project of the Creative Europe funding programme.
A PDF version of the publication is available for free download (open access) at www.zkm.de/upic.
