- Werner Büttner (* 1954 in Jena) has been making a lasting mark on the European art scene since the eighties in company with artists such as Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen. His paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures sparkle with imagination and rebellious wit. With a sense of irony and occasionally biting ridicule the artist confronts social realities and dares to break social taboos. Büttner rejects the illusionism of the resurgent figurative art of the sixties and seventies, as he does the conventional notions associated with abstract painting. In his exploration of contemporary aesthetic tendencies he discovered a way of dealing with language and its relationship to art that is both cryptic and full of wordplay. This publication presents the art of this pioneer and rejuvenator of German painting in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
