- Walter D. Mignolo is William H. Wannamaker Distinguished Professor of Literature and Roman Studies and director of the Center for Global Studies and the Humanities at Duke University (Durham, New York) and holds an associated research position at the Andina Simón Bolívar University in Quito, Ecuador. He has been working for the past 25 years on the formation and transformation of the modern/colonial world system and on the idea of Western civilization. Among his major works are: »The Darker Side of The Renaissance. Literacy, Territoriality, and Colonization« (University of Michigan Press, 1995); »Local Histories / Global Designs. Coloniality, Subaltern Knowledge, and Border Thinking« (Princeton University Press, 2000); »The Idea of Latin America« (Blackwell, 2005); »The Darker Side of Western Modernity. Global Futures, Decolonial Options« (Duke University Press, 2011); »Learning to Unlearn. Decolonial Reflections from Eurasia and the Americas« (with Madina Tlostanova, Ohio State University Press, 2012). Mignolo has co-organized with Rolando Vázquez summer schools on »Coloniality and Decoloniality« at the Roosevelt Academy of the University of Utrecht in Middelburg, Netherlands. He has coedited numerous books and edited a wide range of journals. He is a member of many international advisory boards, including the advisory board of the Hong Kong Advanced Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Studies, where he was a visiting fellow from January to June of 2012. He will be at the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa (CISA) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (ZA), at the invitation of the Wits Distinguished Scholars.
