My City, My Sounds

Fri, December 12, 2014 2:00 pm – Sun, December 14, 2014 3:00 pm CET

Location
Lecture Hall

The symposium will explore the sonic augmented reality and its potentials.

Though often misunderstood as an exclusively visual concept, the expression augmented reality has to be stretched when it comes to audio aspects.

Combining position data and sound gives rise to an auditory meta level but it can also lead to an immersive experience when combined with appropriate technology.

In addition to a preview on future technology trends as well as an overview on different fields of application of geolocative sound, the symposium will also provide a broad based platform for transdisciplinary discourses. From interactive radio dramas to the communication of art to sonic geocaching and urban sound installations - many different disciplines complement with geolocative audio formats.

The symposium critically examines the question which actual potentials derive from these technological developments and innovations for the medium-to-long term.

An app developed at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics will be presented with which one can design public spaces soundwise in an augmented reality environment. It enables users as well as sound artists to playfully locate sounds or sound art compositions which then can be found by other users.

The symposium addresses scientists as well as artists and developers. The symposium is held in English.
