An virtual BioMedium opens an exhibition and a self-playing piano receives its melody from space – the age of BioMedia is here!
For centuries, humans have attempted to create machines that simulate life. Today, the idea of media simulating life is more realistic than ever before: we are entering the »Age of Media with Life-like Behavior« – the age of BioMedia!
BioMedia – or bio-mimetic media – exhibit life-mimicking characteristics, such as independent movement, adaptation and reaction to their environment. Just like a living organism. Beginning with the simulation of motion and progressing to kinetic art and cybernetic theory, the simulation of life and life systems through artificial intelligence and generative technologies have led 21st century humanity to reckon with machines on an existential level.
What will the coexistence of humans and artificial agents look like? And who or what defines what is alive and what is intelligent today, now that intelligence and empathy are no longer the exclusive preserve of humans?
Explore all these questions with us – the new exhibition opens its doors on Saturday, December 18!
On Saturday, 11 am – 9 pm and Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm CET, the exhibition can be visited free of charge in atrium 8+9 (2G+ applies)! The free tickets are available on site at the information desk.
Get interactive with the workshop Expanding our senses: BodyMedia on Saturday at 11 am!
The Digiloglounge, the exhibition and discussion platform of the digilog@bw – Digitization in Dialogue research network, will also open as part of the exhibition.
Meanwhile, a very special opening ceremony awaits you in the livestream on Saturday from 6 pm:
A virtual BioMedium will give the opening speech, a self-playing piano will perform a piece based on the signals of a space telescope, and a live tour of the exhibition will introduce works and artists.
Livestream program (Saturday, 18.12.)
6 pm | Welcome speech by a BioMedium
6.15 pm | »Fantasie#4«, an audiovisual performance for space data and AI, by Quadrature in collaboration with Christian Losert; duration: 15 minutes
6.35 pm | Live tour through the exhibition (including interviews with artists)

Infos about the performance
Electromagnetic waves are received with the aid of a radio telescope. The raw data is transposed into the audible frequency range and serves as the basis for the following variations: Diverse (algorithms and) artificial intelligences process this musical theme, from pure midi translation to increasingly virtuosic interpretations. Trained on human-made sounds, neural networks negotiate a basic principle of classical composition, searching for traces of familiar harmonies and melodies in the alien noise. In imitation of creative action and expression, electronic agents cultivate the raw signals into rhythms and negotiate the boundaries of chance, intention, and interpretation.

2G+ for visiting ZKM
The 2G+ rule currently applies to visits to exhibitions, as well as events, guided tours and workshops. Exempt from the testing requirement are visitors with booster vaccinations or who have not been fully immunized for longer than 6 months. The proof must be carried on the basis of a QR code via app or in paper form; the yellow vaccination card alone is no longer sufficient. In addition, visitors need an official identification document (identity card or passport) for verification.
The implementation and design of the 2G+ rule is the responsibility of the federal states. You can read the current regulations here.
