Points On The Curve

4DSOUND is a laboratory and cultural collective exploring spatial sound as a medium. Since 2008, it has developed an innovative spatial sound technology that has significantly improved and expanded the possibilities to create, perform and experience sound spatially. 4DSOUND is a fully omnidirectional sound environment, where the listener can appreciate sound in a virtually unlimited spatial continuum. Sound can move infinitely distant or intimately close to the listener.
From February 1–March 13, 2016, 4DSOUND will be shown in the rooms of ZKM and Karlsruhe University of Art and Design. During this period the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics (IMA) will present a program of new artist residencies, an interdisciplinary Hacklab and artist panel discussions together with 4DSOUND. Drawn from the title of Luciano Berio’s composition »Points on the curve to find…« (1974), »4DSOUND: Points On The Curve« explores the evolution of electronic and spatial music. A discourse about future developments will be stimulated: What are the driving ideas and movements around sound and space that have shaped our present musical topography and what potentials provides the future? What might spatial sound and immersive technologies open up for the future of sound exploration and new musical forms?
The program will consist of several modules:
As part of the festival »Performing Sound, Playing Technology« in February 2016 IMA and 4DSOUND will host a Spatial Sound Hacklab exploring new instrumental approaches, performance tools and conceptual frameworks in working with spatial sound. There will also be an Artist Residency Program throughout February, presenting a new generation of sonic creators from around the world. Furthermore, spatial re-interpretations of key works from electronic music history will be shown during several concerts in March 2016. The program will also celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the Chemnitz-based experimental imprint raster-noton with installations and live-shows in 4DSOUND from some of the label’s artists.
