on-the-fly: Live-Coding Hacklab

»ARquatic« by CodeKlavier is an audio and augmented reality experience in which live music is transformed into fantasy plants that unfold in front of the audience’s eyes. As the name suggests, CodeKlavier allows Dutch pianist Anne Veinberg to program through her playing. Together with Felipe Ignacio Noriega and Patrick Borgeat (HfM Karlsruhe) she developed the piece »ARquatic«, with which the concert evening begins.

To experience the visuals in augmented reality, please download the ARquatic app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. On the day of the performance, you will find both a live and stream channel there. Please connect to the stream channel if you are watching the stream from home.

Kıvanç Tatar invites the audience into a 'glitchy' and noisy world of AI-synthesized sounds distributed on 47 speakers with his piece 'Coding the Latent No.1'. His live performance combines live coding with artificial intelligence-based audio generation. (binaural; premiere)

The composition »Brief Intro to Piano is Forte Memory« is based on a childhood memory of Slovenian live coder Luka Prinčič. The piece, which will premiere at the concert, is a live coded, partially improvised composition that recalls the protected spaces of childhood and the perceived trust therein. (premiere)

»Modulating Spaces« is a live coded spatial audio performance by Blaž Pavlika. Spatial sound opens up a multitude of possibilities to work with sound as a physical medium. Live coding, in turn, makes it possible to shape the medium »on-the-fly«. A virtual spherical sound space is created, which is constantly reshaped with each performance. (binaural)

For the project »autoconstruccion« CNDSD & Iván Abreu explore the architectural notion of autoconstruction using machine learning processes. This results in the almost cinematographic design of a three-dimensional virtual environment coupled to a binaural musical narrative. (premiere)

The concert concludes with the presentation »Necrobiopsi«, a bio-art project by Gaia Leandra that develops new narratives at the intersection of art and science. Against the backdrop of planetary change, Leandra contemplates the invisible micro-world of organisms and ponders an age after humankind.

The works I have made that involve live coding are mostly conceptual, exploring the nature of live coding or connections of live coding with other practices. Examples are »Code LiveCoding Live«, where I use live coding to sonify the side-effects of live coding, »Etudes pour le Livecoding à une Main«, where I explore live coding with one-handed keyboards based on a script of a live coding performance from the past, and »The Machine is Learning«, where I use an extremely simple gestural live coding language to highlight the labour involved in machine learning.
 
This is what I love about the live coding community:
I love the activist style (manifestos!), and the openness and diversity in the community.

For me the »on-the-fly« project:
The »on-the-fly« project is an interesting project bringing together the state-of-the-art live coding community and practices across Europe, giving opportunities to emerging live coders!

It's a beautiful opportunity to connect the live coding community with specific institutions that are open to our alternative way of creation. In this way, both institutions and the live coding community can exchange knowledge and ideas based on inclusion, diversity, and togetherness.

I play using the »SuperCollider« programming language, where I develop the functions / algorithms that I use. I enjoy playing from scratch, a.k.a starting from a white screen. I'm currently exploring machine learning possibilities within live coding focusing on the real time human-algorithm feedback.

Live coding could hardly be understood without the community; Sharing, spaces, code and ideas, is at the live coding core definition.

My visuals tend to start very minimal, with only a few visual elements on screen. It then gradually builds up to a chaotic glitchy texture that aims to capture the general feeling of the music rather than react to it.

The live coding community has been very welcoming and very inspiring, allowing me to learn at a steady pace and encouraging me to try new
techniques and software. They're open to new ideas and new ways of working.

Using live coding; 1- as a method to explore latent audio spaces, 2- for procedural audio generation with ML and AI.
