Biography

Julia Gerlach is a curator and a producer of contemporary music and sound art as well as author and editor of catalogs, CDs and professional articles. She studied musicology in Berlin and Paris (among others with Prof. Dr. Helga de la Motte-Haber). Until 2009 she worked as a freelancer in Berlin (among others for the Berlin Society for New Music and for the research project »Body - Music – Gender«). From 2009 to 2012 she was project coordinator and curator at ZKM | Karlsruhe (among other things coordinator of the project »Amazonas - Music Theater in Three Parts« and curator of the urban sound theater »Maritime Rites« by Alvin Curran and, together with Peter Weibel, of the comprehensive exhibition »Sound Art. Sound as a Medium of Art«). From 2012 to 2019 she was head of the music section of the Berlin Artists' Program of the German Academic Exchange Service. Additionally, she curated the sound art exhibition »Urban Sounds« in Basel (2013), initiated and directed »mikromusik. Festival of experimental music and sound art« in Berlin (2014-2018). Furthermore, she was initiator and co-producer of the German-Brazilian concert and exhibition project with the Ensemble Modern »Re-inventing Smetak« (2014-2017).  Since January 2019 she is secretary of the Music Section at the Academy of Arts Berlin and responsible for program development.

Her publications include a documentation of the electronic studio of the TU Berlin 1996, »HUM. The Art of Collecting« (2008), »Blickwechsel II«, the Berlin Artists' Program of the DAAD 2013, the CD series ZKM, portrait CDs on Clara Iannotta and Turgut Ercetin, »Smetak's Inventions« (2018). She holds seminars and lectures on contemporary music, sound art and curating. In addition to various jury activities, she is an artistic advisor for the Beethoven Jubilee in Bonn and advisor for the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor.
