Media Art 21: After Symposium at Art Basel Hong Kong, the Contemporary Media Art Platform Continues at Rhizome World in New York

Media Art 21 (MA21) – the growing bilingual platform for critical discourse on contemporary media art – continues to expand its international presence. Following its inaugural public symposium at Art Basel Hong Kong in March 2025, a second event will take place in New York City as part of Rhizome World on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Hosted by the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, MA21 is co-organized by ZKM and the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing. The project is structured around three central themes: The PosthumanEcologies, and The Commons. With a strong emphasis on perspectives from the Global South and a pedagogical approach grounded in everyday technological practices, MA21 provides contextual access to media art materials from the year 2000 onward. Its mission is to build an international network of artists, curators, and scholars through critical reflection and open accessibility.

The first symposium, held on March 27, 2025, in Hong Kong as a parallel project of Art Basel, brought together an international lineup of contributors, critically examining media art in the age of AI, while highlighting practices from Latin America and Southeast Asia and exploring forward-looking pedagogical strategies for media art in the 21st century.

In New York, MA21 continues within the framework of Rhizome World – a month-long program organized by Rhizome, a pioneering platform for digital culture and media art that has championed the promotion and archiving of network-based art since the 1990s.

Moderated by Rudolf Frieling and Zhang Ga, with Alistair Hudson joining remotely from ZKM, the symposium will feature contributions from Doreen A. Ríos, Lauren Lee McCarthy, Tega Brain, and Miao Ying. MA21 at Rhizome World once again brings together diverse voices to explore pressing issues surrounding the Posthuman and Ecologies, alongside the Commons as intersecting forces shaping media art today.

With Rudolf Frieling (SFMOMA), Alistair Hudson (ZKM), and Zhang Ga (CAFA) as co-artistic directors, Media Art 21 is conceived as an open project fostering participation, dialogue, and knowledge exchange across global contexts.

The MA21 Symposium At Rhizome World is made possible by the generous support of OnassisONX.
