Prof. Dr. Marc Debus talks to us about the decline in trust in political institutions and the influence of citizens' online activities and interaction with politicians on their perceptions, attitudes and behaviour.

Previous research has shown that digital media participation has a positive, albeit small, effect on political participation. While scholars have mostly focused on explaining the size of this effect, the project by Prof. Dr. Marc Debus, Prof. Dr. Harald Schoen and Dr. Rosa M. Navarrete will examine how agenda setting has changed from top-down and bottom-up through the use of digital media. Among other things, the project will analyse whether and how parties and politicians use their online participation to influence the behaviour of citizens.

Our guest: Prof. Dr. Marc Debus is Professor of Comparative Government at the University of Mannheim and Director of the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES). He studied political science, sociology, methods of empirical social research, modern history and economic and social history at the Universities of Marburg and Mannheim and received his PhD from the University of Konstanz. His research focuses on the analysis of political institutions, especially in multi-level systems, and their impact on legislative activity, party competition and governing in coalitions.
Moderator: Sabine Faller is a research assistant in the Museum Communication Department at ZKM | Karlsruhe. Her focus is on the conception and implementation of workshops, projects and educational programs in the fields of media art, digital education and online learning – currently for the research project »Digitalisierung im Dialog – digilog@bw«.
