Listening to Trees

How can we sense and make sense of forests with devices, techniques and our bodies? How might we cultivate an interdisciplinary »arts of noticing« (Tsing) for attending to forests and their role in critical zones?

Engaging with themes in the »Critical Zones« exhibition and catalogue, this workshop explores different ways of listening to forests, drawing on different traditions, techniques, methods, media and approaches – from »Shinrin Yoku« (forest bathing) to sensing devices, data sonification to sound walks and storytelling. The aim of the workshop is to compare the different approaches and their respective medialities. By this we want to learn about the potentials and limits of forest experiences under current sensing conditions between immediacy and mediation. This half-day workshop will invite participants to try and reflect on different techniques, in order to prototype a public resource documenting these approaches. It will take place online at your local forest, park, garden or green space. The workshop and discussion will mainly be in English but resources will be made available in German.

Digital requirements: internet access, video conferencing capability (computer camera and microphone). The workshop will be hosted on zoom. We will send you the Zoom link shortly before the workshop begins.

Your registration is possible until the evening before.
