Cryptolab

Hands-on workshop on cryptocurrencies

Sun, February 25, 2018 11:15 am – 6:00 pm CET

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Altcoins and Cryptokitties – what's it all about? As part of the exhibition »Open Codes, Life in Digital Worlds«, the ZKM is organising a workshop to give its participants an insight into the use of cryptographic currencies.

The Kryptolab workshop is intended to provide participants with an easy-to-understand overview of this complex of topics, even without prior knowledge.
The concept of digital currencies offers new possibilities, independent of banks and national borders, as an alternative to traditional payment systems.
But how do such currencies work and how do you use them? At the »Kryptolab« as part of the »Open Codes« exhibition, a series of workshops will focus on understanding the underlying techniques using practical examples and being able to try them out for yourself. Those who want to actively participate should bring their own laptop or smartphone. Each workshop participant will receive a small (symbolic) amount of cryptocurrency with which they can experiment without worry.
Learning by doing is the motto. The following areas will be covered in three blocks spread over the day:

Block 1 (11:15-13:00)

  • Theoretical basics about Bitcoin or the blockchain, the history of its development and the people behind it.
  • Introduction to safe handling and the risks involved.
  • Which tools do I need for dealing with cryptographic currencies.
  • Lunch in the foyer (not included in the workshop)

Block 2 (13:30 -15.30).

Practical work:

  • Help with setting up your own hardware
  • Storage: mobile wallet, desktop wallet, hardware wallet, paper wallet
  • "Hello neighbour, I'll send you money".
  • How does a transaction work and what are the fees?
